A VISION

song for voice and piano

Completed in December 2018 for mezzo-soprano and piano, A Vision has been set to the poem of the same name by nineteenth century English poet John Clare.  Representative of the Romantic era, the lyrics appear to portray a visionary dream of a utopian world disrupted by a sense of loss. Several years before he wrote this poem, Clare was certified insane and admitted to a mental asylum.  The piece is characterized by the use of minor keys and a jerky rhythm, representing a melancholic tone and an unsettled state of mind.
