Arabian Rhapsody Suite

String Quartet

Scored for violin, viola, cello and double bass, Arabian Rhapsody Suite was composed between 2007 – 2008 and is made up of 3 movements.  Written in free fantasy form (i.e. a rhapsody) and in a style suggestive of Arab music, this work is characterized by an emphasis on melody and rhythm, rather than harmony.  The 1st movement (Marrakesh) seeks to capture the thrilling vibrancy and mystique of Marrakesh with the use of embellished melodies, syncopated rhythms and ornamented passages.  In contrast, the 2nd movement (Reverie) is dreamlike in character as its name suggests, whilst the final movement (Sultan’s Feast) is rich and heavy in equal measure.  Played con gusto it features accented offbeats and an abundance of melody.
